Food Network star Duff Goldman gets recognized everywhere he goes — just not always as himself.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Goldman opened up about a fun encounter he had in Guatemala where a local mixed up with fellow TV personality and food aficionado Adam Richman.

Goldman said he was in “the middle of nowhere” when someone approached him and asked in Spanish if he was a “famous chef in America.” When Goldman confirmed, he said, the man pointed out another woman dining nearby who recognized the pastry chef.

“So I went over to go talk to her,” he recounted, noting that the man accompanied him to serve as translator for the woman, who spoke Kʼiche. “We’re talking through her and she’s like, ‘Oh, I watch you on TV. I’ve seen you.’ She goes,’Man v. Food.’ “

Man v. Food, of course, is Richman’s popular, long-running Travel Channel series. Goldman is best known for his Food Network series, Ace of Cakes.

Goldman said he found the mix-up “funny” — and knew how to still make the moment special for the woman. “I call Adam Richman and I put him on speakerphone. I explained to him the whole scenario. This is what’s happening right now. So then he started talking to the lady and she started looking confused. I was like,’Man v. Food,'” he recounted. “Then she looked at me and I was like, ‘Ace of Cakes‘. . . . Then she got it. She knew she’d seen me somewhere, but I was like a different Jew. Really funny.”

Food Network fans have watched Duff create hundreds of over-the-top cakes at his Baltimore, Maryland, bakery, Charm City Cakes, for 10 seasons on Ace of Cakes. The series ended in 2011, but Goldman still regularly appears on the network’s competition series, among other programming.

During his interview with PEOPLE, Goldman was candid about his new focus: his family. Goldman married wife Johnna in 2019, and they share one child, Josephine, 2. His life, he says, looks different than he ever imagined.

“My parents had a really nasty divorce, and I was like, ‘Cool. I don’t ever want any of that,’” he said. “Then I met my wife, and I was like, ‘Oh, that’s how you’re supposed to feel about people.’”
