Life-long love of cooking sparks The Crab Hut | News

Qwan Butts says that cooking was always his first love. Growing up, he spent time watching cooking shows but took a different path career-wise. He wound up becoming a welder rather than following his true passion.

His welding job allowed him to travel all over the world while working but it eventually became tiresome. When Butts would come home from work, he cooked for family and friends.

That eventually transitioned to him posting his food on social media and selling plates, which proved to be a hit. He still didn’t make the leap into cooking, opting instead to try out other jobs. Without a lack of passion on his part for those gigs, they eventually failed.

Then he was approached by a friend who was aware of his cooking skills, and he offered him a space to cook. Although he still wasn’t completely confident, he reembraced his first love of cooking full-time. With his life-long passion for cooking, it would be hard for him to fail.

Butts eventually opened The Crab Hut at 2679 N. Columbia St. in Milledgeville. The process was not always easy because he did not come from a business background and had little to no idea

Assam’s new ‘Healthy Food Streets’ to boost local economy and promote better hygiene

In a bid to stimulate the local economy and improve public hygiene, the northeastern state of Assam is set to launch four new healthy food streets across the region. This collaboration between the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is aimed at promoting indigenous cuisine, attracting tourists, and fostering entrepreneurship while ensuring adherence to strict hygiene standards. Assam, known for its rich cultural heritage and gastronomic delights, has been working towards developing culinary tourism as a powerful tool for economic growth. With these new food streets, the state aims to provide a unique culinary experience to local and international visitors, spotlighting the diverse and scrumptious Assamese cuisine. Some of the other states that are going to get these ‘healthy food streets’ are Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra. Also, the other northeastern states such as Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura will get one such street each.

Guy Fieri to feature 3 Memphis restaurants on Food Network in February

Three Memphis restaurants will be featured on Food Network in February.

Guy Fieri will feature Las Torjaga Deli Mexicana and StickEm on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” It was his first visit to both restaurants.

Alcenia’s will appear on an episode of “Triple D Nation.” It’s the second time Fieri has visited this Southern soul food eatery.

Alcenia’s: ‘From Steak to Seafood’

Fieri will feature Alcenia’s, 317 N. Main St., in an episode of “Triple D Nation” set to air Feb. 9.

The “From Steak to Seafood” episode is described as: “On this trip, Guy Fieri’s having a turf-and-surf soiree! First, a Brazilian-American fusion place in Orlando, Fla., is serving traditional shrimp stew and savory steak. Then, a soul-food spot in Memphis, Tenn., is dishing out a fierce fried sandwich, and a waterfront joint in Tiverton, R.I., is bringing some killer flavor to next-level seafood platters and chowders.”

Audit says Utah needs to build 28,000 units a year – Deseret News

A new legislative audit released Tuesday warned “time is running short” for Utah policymakers to take action on the state’s growing housing problems, calling on lawmakers to require the creation of a statewide strategic plan.

Legislative auditors concluded Utah needs to build almost 28,000 units of housing a year to keep up with the state’s forecasted growth while signaling a continued prevalence on single-family homes rather than higher-density housing would be a “recipe for trouble as Utah continues to grow.”

Auditors also concluded Utah lawmakers should consider ways to “increase zoning density on a wide scale” and implement more “incentives and penalties for noncompliance” with the state’s housing goals to “ensure local government compliance.”

Auditors floated policy options like tying existing land use requirements to projected population growth (seen in states including Oregon and California) and considering “upzoning,” or requiring local governments to allow more homes to be built on less land. They pointed to policies in Oregon, Minnesota and Pennsylvania as possible examples, as well as an aggressive upzoning law in New Zealand.

Healthy food is increasingly out of reach for Island’s poorest

Report highlights high cost of housing and food; lower-income people are forced to make difficult choices

Healthy food is becoming increasingly out of reach for low-income families on Vancouver Island, a new report says.

Grocery costs for a family of four on a nutritious diet cost $1,366 on average per month in the Island Health region, a BC Center for Disease Control report says.

Those in the North Island health region, which includes the Sunshine Coast, were found to pay $1,370 on average, while families in Central Vancouver Island and South Vancouver Island paid an average of $1,343 and $1,386 respectively during a survey in May and June 2022.

These prices are among the highest in BC, with only two other health-authority regions with higher costs: the Northshore-Coast Garibaldi region and the Northwest region.

Having access to healthy, nutritious food is important and has a direct impact on health and well-being, said Charmaine Enns, medical health officer for Island Health.

“These are not inconsistent findings,” Enns said. “This means that one in seven households in BC are experiencing food insecurity, and that one in six children in BC live in a household with food insecurity.”

‘Cooking With Lynja’ TikTok Star Dies at 67

Lynn Yamada Davis, a TikTok creator who entertained millions of people with her zany style and cooking tips on her account, Cooking With Lynja, died on Jan. 1 in Red Bank, NJ She was 67.

The cause of death, at Riverview Medical Center, was esophageal cancer, her daughter Hannah Mariko Shofet said. Ms. Davis lived in Holmdel, NJ

Ms. Davis began creating the wholesome Cooking With Lynja videos in 2020 with her youngest child, Tim Davis, to help keep up his cinematography skills during the pandemic lockdown.

Her social media accounts have remained active after her death, because she had asked her son to post videos that had already been edited. One such video shows the two of them looking for truffles in Italy.

“My mom was like my partner in crime,” Mr. Davis, 27, who edited the TikTok account, said in a phone interview.

Something else she requested, Mr. Davis said, was that he posted a few older videos that they had made together about a decade ago.

Food Network Star Michael Chiarello’s Company Addresses Fatal Allergies

Michael Chiarello‘s loved ones are still looking for answers following his sudden death.

The Food Network star’s family confirmed Oct. 7 that he had died following a week of treatment for an acute allergic reaction that had led to anaphylactic shock. Now, days after he passed at age 61, medical professionals still haven’t determined what led to the severe reaction.

“The doctors don’t know what caused the allergic reaction and neither does the family,” a representative for Michael’s company Gruppo Chiarello told People on Oct. 10. “They may never know.”

Before his death, Michael was a cornerstone of the culinary entertainment industry for decades. After getting his start in 1999 on PBS’ cooking series Season by Seasonhe moved over to the Food Network in 2003. There, he embarked on what would become a ten-season run of Easy Entertaining with Michael Chiarellolater competing on episodes of the network’s The Best Thing I Ever Ate and The Next Iron Chef as well as Bravo’s Top Chef Masters.

Prior to his TV debut, Michael was named Chef of the Year by Food & Wine Magazine in 1985, founded Chiarello Family Vineyards in 1999 and released a number of cookbooks.

10-year-old girl dies after eating her birthday cake: Common foods that can turn toxic

Cutting the birthday cake is one of the most memorable activities one can remember. But what if the same cake turns out to be the reason for your demise? Well, this might sound bizarre, but unfortunately, it turned out to be a reality for a 10-year-old girl in Patiala, Punjab, who died of suspected food poisoning on March 25 after eating her birthday cake, and the police filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the bakery that supplied it.
As per sources, Manvi, a Class 5 student, celebrated her birthday on March 24. Her family ordered the cake through an online food delivery application, and they cut the cake around 7 pm, after which she went to sleep. A video of the family celebrating Manvi’s birthday has gone viral after her death.
As per reports, the girl slept well, and then the next morning she asked for water and went back to sleep. Later, she was found unconscious and was taken to a hospital, where she was declared dead. It is also reported that the other five members of the family who ate the cake also fell ill.

Bobby Flay Says He’s ‘Here to Stay’ at Food Network (Exclusive)

While speaking with PEOPLE at the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen on Friday, the Food Network star shared that he is “here to stay” with the network that helped build his stardom.

Flay’s culinary career was on the rise even before making his debut on the network in 1995. In 1982, he was selected to be part of Food & Wine’s (a brand of PEOPLE’s parent company Dotdash Meredith) annual class of “Best New Chefs”, but the awards weren’t presented in-person that year. Three decades later, the festival — which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year — surprised him by officially presenting Flay with the belated accolade in front of his fellow chefs and friends.

“That was an incredible surprise,” he tells PEOPLE of the award, which he received on stage at the festival’s welcome event. “For them to even think about that all these decades later was truly incredibly thoughtful.”
